Magic City Construction – Different Roof Materials
May 11
At Magic City Construction we believe customer education is important when it comes to selecting the best contractor. On this blog post, we are going to share with you the different types of roofing material used on homes.
Sheet Metal – Sheet Metal is a great roofing material and is extremely durable over time. In addition to a long end of life cycle, most sheet metal is “green” since it is usually comprised of recycled materials. Sheet metal is also energy efficient and help to reflect heat from the home which reduces AC energy consumption. However, in cold weather environments, it is important to have the appropriate insulation for a sheet metal roof as the metal can freeze during winter.
Asphalt Shingles – Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material because they are very affordable, durable, climate adaptable and come in a variety of different colors.
Slate Tiles or Shingles – A popular roofing material used in older homes, slate is impervious to rotting and insects, offers great protection against fire damage and have a long end of life period. Slate requires professional installation from an experienced contractor especially since you can break them just by walking on them. Slate also comes in a limited number of colors and offers a very unique look.
Wood Shingles - Wood shingles, or wood shakes, offer a unique look and feel that is energy efficient. They come in a large variety of different sizes, textures and colors which can make for a unique individual roof. There are drawbacks with wood, it is susceptible to insect burrowing, rot and mold. These roofs have to often be inspected for these symptoms and sealing / shingle replacement is not uncommon.
Clay Tiles – You’ve probably seen (at least on TV) many roofs like this in hotter area like California, New Mexico and Arizona. This is a more expensive roofing option and requires special roof supports due to the weight of the clay. However, clay is impervious to insect burrowing, mold, rot, fire and even stands the test of time. Clay has one of the longest life spans of any other roofing material. Installation requires an experience professional as these tiles can easily be broken from just walking on them.
